Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Course Details

Course Overview

  • The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery) course represents the foundation of medical education in India, and it is the first (undergraduate) level of training required to be licensed as a physician. MBBS is a professional degree in medical sciences, and a candidate with an MBBS degree is certified to be a medical practitioner in India.
  • The course duration is 5½ years - comprising 4½ years of academic training and 1 year of compulsory rotating internship at hospitals and health centres.
  • The MBBS curriculum is competency-based and has been designed to produce an Indian Medical Graduate possessing the necessary knowledge, skills, attitude, and values, enabling them to function as the physician of first contact for patients seeking medical aid.
  • The MBBS course training imparted is as follows:
    • Phase I (First Professional MBBS): Comprises 12 months of training and begins with a 2-week Foundation Course to facilitate the student’s transition into the rigorous schedule of the medical program. This phase includes pre-clinical subjects such as Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry, along with an introduction to Community Medicine, including the Family Adoption Programme (FAP) through village outreach. Students are also exposed to Early Clinical Exposure (ECE) and undergo training in Attitude, Ethics, and Communication (AETCOM) including Humanities.
    • Phase II (Second Professional MBBS): Spans 12 months and involves knowledge acquisition in para-clinical subjects such as Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, and Forensic Medicine & Toxicology. Students are introduced to clinical subjects and undergo clinical postings, family visits under the Family Adoption Programme (FAP), and AETCOM training.
    • Phase III Part I: Comprises 12 months of study during which students are further oriented clinically through training in Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Medicine and allied subjects, Surgery and allied subjects, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Ophthalmology. This phase also includes clinical postings, family visits under FAP, and AETCOM modules.
    • Elective Postings: Follows Phase III Part I for 1 month, consisting of two blocks of 15 days each, allowing students to gain exposure in departments of their choice and broaden their clinical learning experience.
    • Phase III Part II: Comprises 18 months of intensive clinical training (including electives) in General Medicine, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Radio Diagnosis, Anaesthesiology, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, along with continued clinical postings and AETCOM training.
  • Upon successful completion of the academic program, students undergo one year of compulsory rotating internship, gaining practical experience across various specialties and healthcare settings.
  • This curriculum, prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), is structured to develop clinically competent, ethical, and compassionate medical graduates and provides opportunities for pursuing postgraduate specialisation and professional medical practice.
  • The curriculum for the medical program has been designed as per the recommendations of the concerned statutory bodies. Course Outcomes

On completion of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program, the graduates will be able to:

Eligibility

Eligibility for admission to the M.B.B.S. degree course:

Qualifying examination: Admissions to all seats of MBBS/BDS will be done through NEET (UG)

  • Aspirants must be aware that admission to Deemed-to-be Universities is based on the NEET scores and the rank obtained by the candidate. No separate Entrance Examination is conducted by the deemed universities.
  • Admission is determined through the central counselling process conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on behalf of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
  • Candidates should have qualified in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test conducted by the National Testing Agency, Delhi.
  • Candidates should have obtained the minimum percentage of marks. All admissions to the MBBS degree course within the respective categories will be based solely on the marks obtained in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). For all other eligibility requirements, candidates are advised to refer to the official website of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Age Limit

Eligibility for appearing in NEET (UG) shall be as prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and as notified by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for the respective admission cycle.

The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • The candidate must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or must complete 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS course.
  • As per the latest NMC notification, there is no upper age limit for appearing in NEET (UG). However, candidates must satisfy the minimum age requirement of 17 years as stated above.

Indian Citizens and Overseas Citizens of India who intend to pursue MBBS/BDS from a foreign Medical/Dental institution are also required to qualify in NEET (UG).

Student Selection

The selection of students to the MBBS course shall be based solely on the merit list of the candidates in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test as drawn by the admitting/counselling authorities in the respective categories.
